The different key-moments of
the transitioning to an agile organization ask for different
activities, different approaches and different coaches. This is
an overview of activities that often take place when an
organization becomes agile. |

Introduction training
With the new methods and practices come new values and
words. All people involved in the delivery of software products
need to become familiar with this new vocabulary. Through a
straightforward training, varying in duration from 4 – 8 hours,
can everybody be introduced to the agile approach that the
organization is embracing. Training can be enhanced with
discussions and facilitated decision making sessions around the
selection of the pilot projects or pilot teams. |

Project manager training
Project managers are in a pivotal role in a software delivery
project. They support and guide the delivery team, and shield
them from external factors. And they translate wishes and
demands from the outside world into requirements with
priorities, costs and benefits. Training can either be delivered
as Certified Scrum Master training (I’m certified to do this, as
are my colleagues), or as a PMI course. Often the discussion
about what, why, when and how the transitioning process will
take place takes a central role in these courses. |

Agile team skills
When you have already started the move towards agile you may
have the need to review the way your people work with the agile
practices. Through reviews, exercises and coaching during real
project session I have trained teams in activities like stand-up
meetings, brainstorm sessions, retrospectives and design
sessions. |

Planning
It is often believed that agile methods don’t have much eye
for planning. The contrary is true: a project plan may have less
attention then in a plan-driven project, but planning takes
place every day! In larger organizations I work with five levels
of planning, each involving different representatives from the
organization. Visioning takes place within the executive team,
from where the product roadmap is developed. With a roadmap on
the whiteboard the delivery team can start working with the
product owners, detailing the roadmap into a release plan, then
further into an iteration plan for the first release. The
delivery team takes the lead in planning iterations within a
release, and daily commits to their activities and deliverables.
These principles can be taught in a half day workshop, and are
best followed by an actual planning session! |

Facilitation Skills
Becoming an agile leader and team member is about improving
communication skills. Often communication needs support through
facilitation. I have both successfully coached team members into
becoming a better facilitator as well as facilitated decision
processes. |
